Introduction: The eye finally had enough of seeing

Everything had been done, there was nothing left to say or do but go through the motions and there truly was nothing new under the sun. The eye finally had enough of seeing, and the ear its fill of hearing. There was no more wisdom or knowledge to be gained, and no more sorrow or the madness they bring. No one was stirred awake by the dead-of-night cries of the muses demanding to be heard. They were grieving widows, sullen and motionless as if turned to stone, as cold and empty as every single thing, the lot…the whole lot, futile, aimless, empty, hollow, blank and vain. No pleasure, no laughter or madness, no great projects to be undertaken, no acquisitions, the eyes desired nothing. One no longer envied another, and if one were to fall no one offered pity. No one who fell had anyone to pick them up.
The days had already been forgotten before they’d come. So to live was to loathe and detest, and life a thing, a wretch to be scorned and treated with contempt. the dead were truly happier than the living, since in death there was at least honesty, and truth. As everyone came, so did they depart, gaining nothing, since they toiled for the wind. All their days spent in darkness, enduring great frustration, affliction and anger.
And then it came – the spark, a concept, notion, image – the crackling of kindling under a pot, and the aroma rising of something delectable brewing. And so it began again, a resurrection and resurgence of thought. The first step down a long path leading, after much toil and tumult into the void once again. As it has always been before… in a slightly different form perhaps, but the same. We set about our way, telling lies with tight fists.
